History

History of CalWORKs Association

The CalWORKs Association was formed in 2003. The recognition of political advocacy to maintain services to CalWORKs students precipitated organization efforts to restore funding and increase recognition of the valuable services provided by the CalWORKs program. Since that time, the Association has actively participated in local and state legislative efforts, established collaborations with both social services and education advocates and worked to ensure support for CalWORKs students and their children.

In 1996, the federal government redesigned welfare. The new program, named Temporary Aid to Needy Families, TANF implemented changes for welfare recipients.

In response , California recognized the significant role that Community Colleges would play in providing career and educational training for CalWORKs recipients. They also recognized the significance of education in the elimination of poverty.
