In their own words Star Student

Glendale Community College CalWORKs Mom Hasmik Grigoryan is Going to Become a Forensic Psychologist

Glendale Community College CalWORKs Program

I am 33 years old and a mother of two wonderful and smart sons.  I used to live in Armenia, where I got my degree in Forensic Psychology.  My family and I relocated in the U.S. in 2014.  Attending GCC I intend to improve my English in order to apply for the Master’s Program in Forensic Psychology at Cal State University.  Doing some research I found out for myself that it is necessary to get a Master’s degree in the U.S. to be successful and to be able to provide a secure financial future to my family.  It is hard to be a student and a good mother at the same time, but I know that it is worth to put in the effort because at the end I will consider myself as a stated person with a great career.

I have overcome many challenges throughout my life to reach my goals.  I have gone through earthquakes, lost my father when I was 5, and it was too hard to live thirteen years in a place where there are not any appropriate accommodations for daily life.  However, education was primary for me.  I was so proud when I got my diploma in my country.  Now I realize that here it is different, you have to take into account the all the requirements and educational standards.  That is why I am going to apply for a Master’s program here in the U.S.

Faced with financial difficulties I could not think about continuing education, but CalWORKs made it possible for me and now I am able to attend college and set career goals for the future.  GCC CalWORKs also helped me to get valuable work experience working at the CalWORKs office.  The CalWORKs program and staff have played a significant role in helping me to reach my educational goals by providing financial and often emotional assistance.  Thanks to my worker Pamela I was encouraged to go ahead from the first day I met her.  I believe I am on the right path and I will remain there not only for me, but for my family, as well.
