Sade Burrell is an Associate Professor at San Diego Mesa College and an author of two books, What Are You Reaching For? and The Opportunity Guide. Sade has been recognized throughout the state of California for her efforts to eliminate child abuse. As a person who experienced foster care, Sade has traveled the country impacting lives through her story of resiliency and overcoming.

CalWORKs Work Study at Cabrillo College offers employment opportunities for students both on or off campus. This program has served hundreds of students and afforded crucial income and experience they need in order to succeed in school and their careers. Come learn about the variety of employment services available and hear from some of the participants who have benefited.

Discussion of CalWORKs benefits available to students in crisis situations including CalWORKs Immediate Need, Expedited CalFresh, homeless assistance, Housing Support Program, Family Stabilization, and benefits and services after disasters.

This session will provide a glimpse of Los Rios Eats, a nutritional education series that is innovative (and FUN!) in its partnership with American River and Sacramento City Colleges Basic Needs, CalWORKs and Culinary Programs. Los Rios Eats is a unique approach to CalFresh Outreach that focuses on CalWORKs, EOPS and Former Foster youth programs.

This session will provide an update on the meaningful work the Project SPARC leaders have embarked on over the last year. The panel of SPARC leaders will share how their experiences as CalWORKs parenting students have allowed them to embrace the Human-Centered Design approach in addressing challenges that impact themselves and their families within the public assistance and community college systems. Through storytelling they will share their collective and personal wins, along their transformational journey.

College enrollment fell to its lowest level since 2007. Most of the decline took place in two-year colleges, which had their lowest enrollment levels in 20 years

Human-Centered Design (HCD) is a creative problem-solving methodology that centers the lived experience of stakeholders being served by programs, policies, products and services. This session will demonstrate how learning and applying HCD can improve your programs, inspire your teams, and deliver more meaningful and responsive services. We’ll explore how HCD can be an effective process for bringing Guided Pathways to life, while sharing what our civic design firm has learned in the past nine months working with the CalWORKs Association.
