LIFTING CALIFORNIA FAMILIES OUT OF POVERTY, THROUGH EDUCATION
To provide professional development and leadership, promote statewide collaboration, influence policy, and to advance CalWORKs families’ success and self-sufficiency through educational excellence and workforce training.
THE CALWORKS ASSOCIATION IS A VOLUNTEER-LED, NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
Membership of the CalWORKs Association includes CalWORKs staff, students, and allies from all 114 of California’s Community Colleges.
WHAT IS CALWORKS?
“CalWORKs” is an acronym for California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids, and it is the name of the welfare program in California for families with children under eighteen. CalWORKs public benefits (including cash aid) are limited to four years in a person’s lifetime. In return for CalWORKs benefits, parents participate in activities that will lead them to become more employable when their time on CalWORKs is over.
The CalWORKs Association believes that one of the best ways to prepare welfare parents for future success and self-sufficiency is through education and training at a community college. Furthermore, we believe that children in welfare families will thrive as a result of seeing their parents going to college. We often hear from successful adult children who were raised in CalWORKs families, “I saw my mom go to college, so I knew I could go to college, too.”
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE
Community College CalWORKs Programs receive funding from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office:
- For the purpose of assisting welfare recipient students and those in transition off of welfare to achieve long-term self-sufficiency through coordinated student services offered at community colleges
- To pay for work study positions, job placement, child care, coordination, curriculum development and redesign, and, under certain conditions, post-employment skills training and instructional services for CalWORKs students.
WE ♥ OUR STUDENTS
The CalWORKs Association is proud of our CalWORKs students and we believe in their bright, prosperous, and happy futures.
